The Roulette Wheel
A standard casino roulette wheel is made of polished wood and is nearly
90centimeters (3 feet) in diameter and weighs about 45 kilograms (100
pounds)
The numbers on the roulette wheel are not in sequential order.
The main pockets of a roulette wheel are numbered from 1 to 36 alternate between red and
black. The numbers are not arranged in high-low order nor are they placed
randomly. The numbers are ordered in a way as to achieve a mathematical balance between high and low, red and black
and even and odd, with red and black numbers alternating and with red numbers positioned opposite the black
number.
There is also a green pocket numbered 0 and a second pocket marked 00 in most roulette
wheels in the United States ( not in Europe ).
The main difference between the European and American Roulette Wheel is the
0s. The European RouletteWheel with only a 0 and no
00, favor the gambler and alters the house edge in comparison to American Roulette. This 0/00 discrepancy changes
the house advantage from 2.7 percent with the European Wheel to 5.26 on the American Roulette Wheel which have both
the zero and the double zero.
The American Roulette
Wheel
The American
Roulette wheel has 38 pockets ranging from 0, 00, and 1 through 36.
The 0 and 00 pockets are green, while the other 36 pockets are evenly divided between red and
black.
In the American Roulette wheel, the number face the outside of the
wheel. Usually, pairs of odd numbers alternate with pairs of even
numbers. The 0 and 00 are opposite each other and
every red number is opposite a black number.
The European
RouletteWheel
The European
Roulette wheel has 37 pockets: 0 and 1 through 36. There is no 00
on the European Roulette wheel.
In the European Roulette wheel, the numbers face the inside of the wheel.
The semi circle (arc) to the right of the 0 has nine high red numbers and
nine low black numbers. The semi circle (arc) to the left of the 0 has nine low
red numbers and nine high black numbers
